John’s passion for photography began when his parents purchased a Minolta 35mm camera for his high school graduation. John then worked a summer job to save money for some cheap darkroom equipment and started developing his own work. That was the beginning of his love for black and white photography.

John is completely self-taught and began developing his creative side by shooting everyday landscapes and streetscapes in urban Brooklyn and Long Island, NY.  After John’s 2nd year of college, he was lucky enough to have his hobby morph into full time employment when a local editor from “Look” magazine took notice of John’s work after a chance encounter at a family dinner.  

After several years of apprenticeship in his early twenties, John formed John McManus Photography to focus primarily on architectural/interior photography. For the past 35 years as an assignment photographer, John has thrived in both New York and the Savannah/Hilton head area as an assignment photographer photographing architecture for architects, builders, designers, magazines and resorts. 

Throughout the rigors of John’s many years of architectural photography work, John found solace and refuge in the flowing landscapes of coastal Georgia and South Carolina. His love of Ecuador has inspired John to create more collections of work from the highlands of the Andes mountains to the pacific coast.

John’s collection of landscapes, seascapes and abstracts offers a glimpse at his peaceful commune with nature and architecture through his camera. John tries to find and photograph his subjects in the hopes for others to see and experience what John feels and sees throughout his photographic journey.

“The camera is the instrument I use to grasp the great beauty of our earth and my love and respect for it’s raw magnificence, either natural or made by the hand of man. 

My goal in the art of photography has always been to evoke emotion in the viewer and provide everlasting portraits of landscapes, seascapes, structures and its inhabitants.
